God of all consolation, you chose and sent your Son to heal the world. Graciously listen to our prayer of faith: Send the power of your Holy Spirit, the Consoler, into this precious oil, this soothing ointment, this rich gift, this fruit of the earth. Make this oil a remedy for all who are anointed with it; heal them in body, soul, and in spirit, and deliver them from every affliction. (Pastoral care of the Sick)
The Rite of Anointing tells us there is no need to wait until a person is at the point of death to receive the Sacrament. A careful judgment about the serious nature of the illness is sufficient. The Sacrament may be repeated if the sick person recovers after the anointing but becomes ill once again, or if, during the same illness, the person's condition becomes more serious. A person should be anointed before surgery when a dangerous illness is the reason for the intervention.
Individual anointing is always available by calling the parish office. If you are aware of anyone seriously ill, at home or in the hospital, or who may be anticipating a serious surgery, you are urged to call the office as soon as possible.
